MINNETONKA — The Delano Black American Legion baseball team was tripped up by Maple Grove in its first round game at the District 10 tournament Thursday.
Delano, the home team, led 6-2 through six innings, but Maple Grove didn’t give up. The Scarlets scored two runs in the top of the seventh to make it interesting, and finished the comeback with three runs, all coming with two outs, in the ninth to take a 7-6 lead.
Maple Grove pitcher Alec Horton got three quick outs in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win for the Scarlets, pushing Delano to the losers’ bracket.
Delano won its second game of the tournament Friday morning, but was ousted Saturday morning by a loss.
Kelzer signs on to play baseball at Crookston By Matt Kane
Sports Editor Nick Kelzer, a 2010 graduate of Delano High School, has signed on to play baseball at the University of Minnesota Crookston.
Kelzer finished his senior season at Delano with a 5-0 record in the regular season, with a 1.62 earned run average.
Kelzer will join 2009 Delano graduate Jay Stevens with the Golden Eagles.
Stevens appeared in 26 games this past spring for Crookston, and batted .159 with two doubles, two RBIs and five runs scored. He played first base and in the outfield.
Crookston finished 3-45 overall in 2010. The Golden Eagles play in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
